Art Nouveau posters and illustrations flourished between 1890 - 1915 and became an important vehicle of the style, thanks to the then new lithography colour printing - printmaking technique, that made the reproduction of art accessible to all and no longer confined to art galleries, allowing the distribution of the Art Nouveau style to a vast audience throughout Europe and the rest of the world via promotional posters and illustrations in magazines.
Inspired by natural forms such as the sinuous curves of plants and flowers, Art Nouveau posters and illustrations are highly stylised, characterised by a sense of dynamism and movement, motifs include delicate tendrils, organic forms, swooping, swirling lines, sensuous curves and most always feature glamorous beautiful women, portraying a new freer modern world.
The most famous Art Nouveau Poster artists of the time included, Alphonse Mucha, Eugène Grasset, Jules Chéret, Georges de Feure and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
