The Impressionism art movement was developed in France in the second half of the nineteenth century, with the first exhibition held in Paris - 1874 of works by the now world renowned artists Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas and Paul Cezanne.
The Impressionist art movement is characterised by painting in the open air, quickly and spontaneously capturing the energy and movement of nature and life around them. A rather significant difference in composition when compared to previous art movements is the relaxation of subject and background, through which each painting represents a single frame of a larger reality on which the artist seemingly by chance happened upon.
