Post-Impressionism Prints Collection

Print Collections > Post-Impressionism

Post-Impressionism is a term used to describe the development of Impressionism in the 1880s. It was led by Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Georges Seurat, who in distinctly different styles of painting moved away from Impressionism’s concern with the spontaneous and naturalistic rendering of light and colour.

Instead they emphasised more symbolic content and structure, stressing the artificiality of the picture. The Post-Impressionists showed colour can be independent from form and composition as an emotional and aesthetic bearer of meaning.

Impressionism and Post-Impressionism continue to be some of the most well-known and loved of artistic movements.
